Developing Early Childhood Themes

Preschool has always been one of my favorite classes to teach, simply because children grow so much during that time. It is so rewarding witnessing all of your (and their!) hard work as they learn and explore new things. When creating curriculum, I try to stick to twelve monthly themes, allowing time for plenty of exploration. The only problem is picking those twelve themes! There are thousands of theme ideas filling the internet, and it takes a lot of time to scroll through the different articles and lists. I’ve done my best here to compile all of  the themes I’ve used in my classrooms, as well as those I’ve heard about from colleagues and found online.

For teachers of younger children, try simpler themes like ABC’s, shapes, and colors. Older children are capable of handling 2 themes per month, allowing for even more learning opportunities. No matter what, make sure you play it by ear. Take into account the academic abilities of your particular group of students, as well as their interests. Feel free to share your own theme ideas, activities, and pictures in the comments below!
